Governance, Risk, and Compliance – Wk 1

It is official, my class BIS 521 at Central Michigan University (CMU) started today. It focuses on governance, risk, and compliance as they relate to cyber security. When I started the program, this was not one of the courses that I was looking forward to taking. It just didn’t seem like it would appeal to me at the time. After taking a few other courses such as project management and introduction network and cyber security, I’m excited about the class.

Last semester, while working on my small business and cyber security course paper, I started to really make the connection between people, administrative controls, and security. Security does not happen in a vacuum, but within an organizational context. There are important organizational factors at play. Using this idea, I have begun to begin thinking about my prior educational experience in training and development and what it means in cyber security. This class, hopefully will allow me to explore that a little bit through the course paper and discussion board.

My intention is to blog once a week as a reflection on the course. This should accomplish a few goals, such as reflecting and thinking about the course and topics each week. Additionally, I’m hoping it will stimulate my writing for the blog and professional development.
